You've probably been on a call where everyone agreed on something, then spent the next day asking, "Wait, who was doing that again?" Google's new feature aims to cut down on that follow-up work.
What a meeting recap is
A recap is a short summary card that Google Chat posts after a meeting. Think of it as the highlights reel of your call. Google says each recap includes four things:
- A meeting summary: a high-level overview of the main topics and takeaways.
- Key decisions: the conclusions and agreements the group reached.
- Action items: the next steps, each with a named owner.
- Direct links: one-click access to the full Gemini meeting notes document, the meeting recording, and the transcript. A transcript is a word-for-word text version of what people said, and Gemini is Google's AI assistant that creates the notes.
The point is that teammates who missed the call, or joined late, can catch up in a minute instead of reading a long transcript or searching Drive for the right file.
When the recap appears
Google's announcement describes a few conditions that have to line up:
- "Take notes for me" must be on during the Google Meet call. This is the Gemini note-taking option inside Meet.
- The meeting needs an associated Chat conversation. The recap is posted in the Chat space linked to that meeting.
- The host's notes-sharing setting matters. If the meeting host sets "Send notes to" to "Hosts and co-hosts only," the recap card will not be posted to the group chat.
If you run a meeting and want the whole team to see the recap, check that last setting before the call starts. If the recap doesn't show up, that setting is the first thing to look at.
Wrap-up
Google's new meeting recaps in Google Chat turn the end of a call into a short, shareable summary of decisions, action items, and links to the full notes. They appear when "Take notes for me" is on and the meeting has a linked Chat space, and they won't post to the group chat if the host limits notes to hosts and co-hosts. Your next step: at your next meeting, check that "Take notes for me" is on, and look in the Chat space when the call ends.
