You know the feeling: you join a meeting five minutes late and three people are already deep in a decision you missed. Or you're the one who stayed on the call and now have forty minutes of notes to clean up before tomorrow. Gemini in Google Meet is the AI helper built into Meet to handle both situations — quietly, in the background, without anyone having to remember to do anything.
What it actually does
The Gemini panel sits on the right side of a Meet call (when it's turned on) and offers a small, focused set of features. Not a giant bag of tricks — just a few things done well:
Take notes for me is the headline feature. When the meeting host turns it on at the start, Gemini listens, transcribes the conversation, and produces a written summary with key points and any next steps people mentioned. The summary lands in the host's Google Drive after the call — no one has to scribble while talking.
Catch me up appears when you join a meeting that's already underway. Instead of awkwardly asking "what did I miss?", you read a short recap of the last few minutes and slide back into the conversation.
Ask Gemini lets you type questions in the side panel during the call — things like "What did we decide about the launch date?" or "Who said they'd send the draft?" Gemini pulls the answer from the meeting transcript, so you don't have to scroll, replay, or interrupt anyone.
After the call ends, the same notes and summary sit in Google Docs, ready to share with anyone the host chooses.
Where it works (and the small limits)
A few things worth knowing before you try it:
- Browser-based. Gemini in Meet works in Chrome on desktop. Other browsers may show fewer features or none at all.
- Paid Workspace plans only. It's an add-on for Google Workspace — not available on free personal Gmail accounts. Check with whoever manages your company's Google setup if you're not sure whether it's enabled.
- Host controls the note-taking. Only the person who starts the meeting can switch "Take notes for me" on. Guests can read the notes if the host shares them, but they can't start the recording.
- It records to do its job. When "Take notes for me" is on, the meeting is being recorded and transcribed. Most organizations tell participants when this is happening — and in many places they have to by law. A quick "I'm turning on note-taking so we all get a recap" at the top of the call covers you.
Wrap-up
Gemini in Meet isn't trying to be everything. It does four things — notes, recaps, in-meeting answers, post-meeting summaries — and does them in the background. If your work involves recurring calls where decisions get made and someone always has to write them up, turn it on for your next meeting and read the summary afterward. You can switch it off again the next time if you'd rather keep the call private.
