Think about the last time you needed a simple checklist, a short report, or a tidy table. You probably opened a document app, made a blank file, and started typing from scratch. Google's update aims to shorten that process by letting you build the file in the same conversation where you asked for it.
What's new
Google says you can now create and refine files and code right inside the Gemini app chat. Here are the three main things it highlights:
- Slide decks: Ask for a presentation outline or slide content, look at the layout in the chat, and ask Gemini to adjust the tone or structure. When you're happy, you can open it in Google Slides or download it as a PPTX (the standard PowerPoint file format) or a PDF.
- Spreadsheets: Ask for a tracker, a table, or a simple data model. You can preview it in Gemini and open it directly in Google Sheets.
- Documents and PDFs: Gemini can draft PDFs (portable documents that look the same on any device), Google Docs, LaTeX (a formatting language often used for scientific papers), Markdown (plain text with simple formatting marks), and TXT (plain text) files. You can edit them in the chat or in a full-screen view.
How the editing works
The part that makes this more than a generator is editing. Google describes a few ways to change a file:
- Type your own edits after expanding the file to full screen.
- Highlight a piece of text and ask Gemini a question about it.
- Ask Gemini to refine it, for example by changing the tone or reorganizing the sections.
Google also says you can upload these files to Drive, its cloud storage service, so they're saved alongside your other documents.
Where it works
PDF preview and editing work on both the web and mobile. Documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT, and code are web-only for now. Google says the features are available to all users, in every language where the Gemini app is offered. Users of all ages who have access to the app can generate files. Admins have no separate control over this feature.
Wrap-up
Google's update lets you make and fix everyday files inside Gemini instead of switching between several apps. The features are simple to explain: generate, preview, and edit in the chat, then move the finished file to Drive, Slides, or Sheets. Your next step is easy: open the Gemini app today and ask it for a small file, such as a checklist or a short table. Then try one edit, either by typing it yourself or by highlighting text and asking for a change.
