OpenAI has confirmed it is expanding how advertising works inside ChatGPT. According to the company's announcement, a new visual ad format is on the way, and the company is also rolling out more tools for the brands that advertise inside the assistant.
For everyday ChatGPT users, the headline is simple: sponsored content is about to look more polished, and more of it is on the way.
What's actually changing
OpenAI's announcement is mostly aimed at advertisers, but four parts of it are worth understanding for anyone who uses ChatGPT:
- A new visual ad format. OpenAI says it has built a new way for ads to appear in ChatGPT, one that's visual rather than only text. The idea, according to the company, is to let ads fit more naturally into how the assistant responds to you.
- Expanded measurement tools. These help advertisers understand how their ads perform — who is clicking, and what happens next. You won't see this directly, but it shapes what kinds of ads companies decide to run inside ChatGPT.
- Attribution partnerships. "Attribution" (basically, giving credit to the ad that led to a sale or sign-up) is the plumbing advertisers need to know their money is working. OpenAI says it is working with outside partners to do this better.
- Brand suitability. This is the part most relevant to you. "Brand suitability" is an industry term for the controls brands have over where their ads appear, so a company can keep its product out of conversations it considers off-message. OpenAI says it is expanding these controls.
Wrap-up
OpenAI is signaling, in plain terms, that ChatGPT is becoming a serious advertising channel — which means more sponsored content for everyone using it. The smartest habit to build today is the same one that has always worked: notice when an answer in ChatGPT looks like an ad, treat it accordingly, and remember the assistant's job is to help you, not to sell to you.
