Chat with Your Own Documents Offline Using NVIDIA ChatRTX

Download and install ChatRTX

Your first step is to get the ChatRTX application onto your computer. Visit the official NVIDIA website and look for the ChatRTX download page. Once you find it, download the installer file. This file will be quite large, often several gigabytes, so it might take a while depending on your internet speed. Once the download is complete, find the downloaded file (it's usually in your "Downloads" folder, often named something like NVIDIA_ChatRTX_Installer.exe) and double-click it to start the installation process. Follow the on-screen prompts, agreeing to the terms and conditions and choosing an installation location if asked. It will extract necessary files and then install the application.

If it looks different: If you can't easily find the ChatRTX page, try searching "NVIDIA ChatRTX" directly on the NVIDIA website. The installation process might ask for administrator permission to make changes to your system, so click "Yes" if prompted to proceed.

Launch ChatRTX and load the core AI models

Now that ChatRTX is installed, it's time to open it up. Find the ChatRTX icon on your desktop or in your Start Menu and double-click it. If it looks different: If the application seems stuck or crashes during this loading phase, ensure your NVIDIA drivers are up to date and your GPU meets the minimum requirements. Try restarting your computer and launching ChatRTX again.

You'll know it worked when: The main ChatRTX interface appears, usually with a chat input box at the bottom and possibly some default "knowledge base" options, indicating the core AI models are ready.

Select your document folder (the "knowledge base")

Now it's time to tell ChatRTX which documents you want it to learn from. In the ChatRTX interface, look for a section related to "Knowledge Base" or "Add Content." This is where you'll point the AI to your personal library of information. You will see on the left-hand side or at the top of the ChatRTX window, there's usually a panel or button labelled "Knowledge Base" or "Data Source." Click on this. You'll then see an option to "Add Dataset" or "Browse Folder." Click this option to open a file explorer window. Navigate to the folder on your computer that holds your documents and select it. This tells ChatRTX where to find the information, which the AI will then use as its exclusive source for your questions.

What happens next: After you select your folder and confirm, the path to your chosen folder should appear in the "Knowledge Base" section.

If it looks different: If you don't see a clear "Knowledge Base" section, look for a "Settings" gear icon, or a menu icon (three lines or dots) which might lead you to content management options. Ensure your documents are in a common text format like PDF, TXT, or DOCX, as the AI might not understand all file types.

You'll know it worked when: The path to your chosen folder appears in the "Knowledge Base" section, and you might see a "Loading" or "Processing" indicator next to it.

Load your documents into the AI

Once you've selected your folder, ChatRTX needs to "ingest" your documents. Ingesting means the AI reads through all the files in the chosen folder, processes their content, and organises it in a way it can easily understand and recall. This is how the AI builds its unique understanding of your specific information. You will see, after selecting your folder, there might be a "Load" or "Process" button to click, or it might start automatically. A progress bar or a "processing files" message will usually appear, showing you how many documents it's working through. This process can take a while, especially if you have many documents or very long ones.

What happens next: ChatRTX reads each document, extracts its content, and prepares it for querying. During this time, your computer might be working hard, and you should avoid shutting down the application. Be patient, as it's doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work.

If it looks different: If it doesn't seem to start processing, ensure you've confirmed the folder selection and look for an explicit "Start" or "Ingest" button. If there's an error, check the file types in your folder – some versions of ChatRTX might only support specific text-based formats.

You'll know it worked when: The "processing" message disappears, and the status changes to "Ready" or "Loaded," indicating the AI has successfully learned from your documents.

Ask your first question about your documents

Now that your documents are loaded, you can finally start chatting with your personal AI! Head to the main chat area of the ChatRTX application. This is typically a large text box at the bottom of the screen where you can type your questions. You will see a blank chat input field, possibly with a placeholder like "Ask a question..." Ask something specific that you know is covered in your loaded documents.

What happens next: Type your question into the input field and press Enter (or click a "Send" button if one is present). The AI will process your question using only the knowledge from your documents and then provide an answer in the chat window. Remember, the AI can only use the information you've provided in the chosen folder; it doesn't connect to the internet for answers.

If it looks different: If the AI doesn't respond or gives a generic answer, ensure your documents are fully loaded (check the "Knowledge Base" status) and that your question directly relates to their content.

You'll know it worked when: ChatRTX provides a coherent, relevant answer based on the information it found within your loaded documents.

Experiment with follow-up and specific questions

The power of chatting with an AI comes from its ability to understand context. Once you've asked your first question and received an answer, you can ask follow-up questions that build on the previous conversation. You will see the previous question and answer history in the chat window, ready for your next input. Try to be specific, or ask for summaries or comparisons if your documents contain such information. Think of it as having a super-fast research assistant that only knows what you've given it.

What happens next: Type a new, related question into the chat input and press Enter. The AI will consider your current question in light of the previous conversation and the document content to give you an even more refined answer.

If it looks different: If the AI gets confused, try rephrasing your question more clearly or explicitly stating which document or topic you're referring to, if you know it. Sometimes, starting a new chat session (if available in the interface) can help clear the AI's short-term memory if it's struggling with the context.
