Build a recipe generator that only uses what you already own with NVIDIA ChatRTX

Turn your fridge into a meal-planning helper by teaching an AI to cook only with ingredients you already have, using NVIDIA’s free tool.

Hook: Imagine an AI that learns your pantry and fridge, then invents dinner using only what you already own. With NVIDIA ChatRTX you can do exactly that—no extra shopping, no waste, and no recipe books. This beginner-friendly guide walks you through the whole process in under ten minutes.

💡 Tip: tap a step’s number when you finish it — a green tick appears and your browser remembers how far you got.

✅ Before you start
  • A Windows PC with an NVIDIA RTX graphics card (20-series or newer).
  • NVIDIA ChatRTX installed (free download from NVIDIA’s site).
  • A short list of ingredients you already have (tinned tomatoes, pasta, cheese, etc.).
  • Rough time: 8–10 minutes.

1

Install NVIDIA ChatRTX

Open your web browser and go to the official NVIDIA ChatRTX page. Look for a button like Download ChatRTX in the top-right corner. Click it, then run the installer. When the installer finishes, open the Windows Start menu and type ChatRTX to launch the app. You’ll see a small window with a chat box at the bottom. You’ll know it worked when the chat box appears and you can type a message.

💬 Example`Open your browser, go to https://www.nvidia.com/ai-data-science/chatrtx/, click Download ChatRTX, run the installer, then open the Start menu and type "ChatRTX".`

2

Load your own recipe file

Inside ChatRTX, look for a button like Load Local File or Add Document. Click it and choose a simple text file on your computer that lists recipes you like. If you don’t have one, create a plain text file called recipes.txt on your desktop and add three or four recipes you enjoy (one per line). After you pick the file, ChatRTX will show a small toast message: “File loaded.” You’ll know it worked when the file name appears in the left sidebar.

💬 ExampleCreate `recipes.txt` on your desktop with this inside:
Spaghetti Bolognese
Chicken Stir-fry
Vegetable Soup

Then in ChatRTX click Load Local File and pick recipes.txt.

3

Teach the AI your ingredients

Still in ChatRTX, look for a button like Add Document again, but this time pick a second file called pantry.txt. In that file, list every ingredient you have right now (e.g., pasta, tinned tomatoes, onion, cheese). ChatRTX will show “Pantry loaded” in the chat area. You’ll know it worked when the pantry list appears in the left sidebar under a heading like Knowledge Sources.

💬 ExampleCreate `pantry.txt` on your desktop with:
pasta
tinned tomatoes
onion
cheese
olive oil

Then in ChatRTX click Add Document and pick pantry.txt.

4

Ask for a recipe that only uses your pantry

In the chat box at the bottom, type: “Give me a dinner recipe using only ingredients from my pantry.” ChatRTX will reply with a short recipe that only uses items from your list. You’ll know it worked when the reply ends with a clear recipe title and ingredient list.

💬 Example`Give me a dinner recipe using only ingredients from my pantry.`

5

Refine the recipe if needed

If the recipe isn’t quite right, type a follow-up like “Can you make it vegetarian?” or “Use less cheese.” ChatRTX will adjust the recipe on the fly. You’ll know it worked when the new version appears in the chat with updated ingredients and instructions.

💬 Example`Can you make it vegetarian?`

6

Save the recipe to your phone

Highlight the recipe text in the chat, copy it (Ctrl+C), open the Notes app on your phone, and paste (long-press → paste). Label the note “Tonight’s dinner.” You’ll know it worked when the recipe is saved and ready to cook.

💬 ExampleCopy the whole reply, open Notes on your phone, paste, and title it “Tonight’s dinner”.

⚠️ Common mistakes
  • Mistake: You load the wrong file and ChatRTX can’t find the recipes. Fix: Double-check the file names in the left sidebar; only files with “recipes” or “pantry” in their names will work.

  • Mistake: The AI suggests an ingredient you don’t have. Fix: Reply with “Remove the cheese” or “Use only what’s in my pantry” and ChatRTX will adjust.

  • Mistake: The chat box doesn’t appear after install. Fix: Restart your PC and open ChatRTX from the Start menu again.

🚀 Try it now

Open ChatRTX, load a tiny recipes.txt with one recipe you like, and create a pantry.txt with three items you already own. Ask for a dinner recipe using only those items. Copy the result to your phone and cook it tonight.
