Translate a Foreign Menu or Sign Right from Your iPhone Camera

Open the Camera app

Find the Camera app on your Home Screen — the icon looks like a small gray camera lens. Tap it once. The viewfinder opens, showing whatever is in front of your rear camera. If your phone is locked, you can also swipe left on the Lock Screen to open Camera without typing your passcode.

If you accidentally open the front-facing (selfie) camera, look for a small curved arrow icon 🔄 near the shutter button and tap it to flip back to the rear lens — the rear lens is the one that "reads" text well, because it has a higher-resolution sensor.

Aim your iPhone at the foreign text

Hold the phone steady, about 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) from the words you want translated. A menu, a street sign, a book page, a museum placard — all of these work. Slowly tilt the phone or move a little closer until the words look crisp on screen.

If the text is small, on a curve (a coffee cup, a bottle), or behind glass, move a bit closer. If the image looks shaky or blurry, tap once directly on the words — that forces the camera to focus on them and sharpens the picture for reading.

Tap the Live Text icon

That little lines-of-text-in-a-square icon is Apple's way of saying: "I see words here, and I can read them." Tap it once. The text on screen highlights in a soft yellow or blue color, as if someone ran a highlighter across each word. At this point the phone has only recognized the letters — it has not translated them yet. That happens in the next step.

If no icon appears, try moving the camera an inch closer or farther, or tap the words directly to wake up the detection. If the icon still doesn't show up, your software may be out of date — go to Settings → General → Software Update and install the latest iOS version.

Choose Translate from the pop-up menu

Once the words are highlighted, a small menu appears near your finger. It usually shows options like Copy, Look Up, Share, and — the one you want — Translate. Tap Translate.

A translation panel slides up from the bottom of the screen. The original text sits on top; the English version appears just below it. If your phone's main language is something other than English, the panel might show that language first — tap the small language name at the top of the panel to switch the output to English.

Read the translation at your own pace

The English text stays on screen as long as you keep the Camera app open and pointed at the original. Read it slowly. Tilt the phone a little to compare the original and the translation side by side. If the camera loses focus, just point back at the text and the translation reappears.

Two honest limits worth knowing: very stylized fonts (the fancy cursive on wedding invitations), handwriting, and faded old signs can confuse the camera and produce no icon. And the translation is excellent for everyday language — restaurant dishes, signs, simple instructions — but it can stumble on poetry, slang, or very technical medical or legal terms.

Save a photo if you want to keep the translation

If you'd like a permanent copy — for a trip diary, to share with a friend, or to look up later — press the round white shutter button at the bottom of the screen. The photo saves to your Photos app, and a small thumbnail appears in the bottom-left corner of the Camera screen.

Later, when you open that photo in Photos, you'll see the same Live Text icon in the corner. Tap it, choose Translate, and the English version pops up again — even without internet, for languages already cached on your phone.

If you only needed the translation for right now, just swipe up from the bottom to close the Camera app, or press the Home button. Nothing is saved, nothing to delete later.
