With Meta AI (Meta's built-in assistant, available inside Messenger in many regions) sitting right inside your chats, you can get a translation in seconds without leaving the conversation. Here's how to do it on your phone, step by step.

Open the chat with the foreign-language message
Tap the Messenger icon on your phone and find the conversation with the message you can't read. Open it. You'll see the chat fill the screen, scroll to the newest messages, and show the foreign-language text in its bubble near the bottom. The message is right there — you don't have to dig for it. If you have lots of chats, use the search bar at the top of Messenger and type the person's name to jump straight in.
You'll know it worked when the chat screen takes over your phone and you can see the unread message sitting in its bubble.
Bring Meta AI into the chat
Tap the message text box at the bottom — the one you normally type replies into — and type @Meta AI. A small list of suggestions should pop up; look for one labeled Meta AI and tap it to invite the assistant into the chat. If @Meta AI doesn't appear as a suggestion, your app may be on an older version, or Meta AI may not be available in your region yet — in that case, update Messenger from your app store and try again. On some versions you'll also see a colorful ring or circle labeled Meta AI near the top of the chat; tapping that works the same way.
You'll know it worked when a small "Meta AI" chip appears next to your message, or when Meta AI posts a welcome reply in the chat.
Ask Meta AI to translate the message
With @Meta AI now part of the conversation, type your translation request in plain English. Mention the language if you know it, and quote the original message so the AI knows exactly what to translate. Press send. Meta AI replies in the same chat thread — you don't have to switch screens or open a new tab. Keep your request short and direct; the clearer your instruction, the better the translation usually is.
You'll know it worked when Meta AI posts a reply in English within a few seconds, right under your message.
Read the translation and check it makes sense
Read Meta AI's reply carefully. Short, everyday sentences usually translate cleanly. Watch out for slang, idioms, or proper names — AI translations sometimes miss those, or pick the wrong meaning for a word with several. If the translation looks odd or incomplete, your next move is Step 5. If it reads naturally, you're done — go ahead and reply to your friend in English, or use Step 5 to ask for a draft reply in their language.

Ask a follow-up if the translation is unclear
If the first translation is confusing, too formal, or missing a word, send a follow-up message to Meta AI in the same chat. Ask for a simpler version, a different tone, or just for the meaning of one specific word. Meta AI keeps the context of the conversation, so it can adjust without starting over. If you'd like, you can also ask Meta AI to help you write a reply in the foreign language — copy what it drafts, edit if needed, and send it to your friend.
