Track your monthly bills and spot unusual charges with ChatRTX

Install ChatRTX and open it for the first time

Download the ChatRTX installer from NVIDIA's site and double-click it. The installer first copies the app, then downloads a large language model — the actual AI that does the reading and answering. This second step can take a while on a slow connection, so plug in your laptop or grab a coffee. When it finishes, a window opens with a chat box at the bottom and a short welcome message.

If you don't see the welcome message, look for an icon on your desktop or in the Start menu labeled ChatRTX — NVIDIA sometimes places it there after installing.

You'll know it worked when the chat window is empty and waiting for you to type — that means the app is running and the AI model is fully loaded.

Make a folder for your bills

On your desktop or inside your Documents folder, create a new folder called something simple like Bills-2025. Drop the PDFs or text versions of your bills into it. Each file should have a clear name like electricity-july-2025.pdf so the AI can tell them apart later when you ask about specific months. If your bill is a photo or a scanned image, ChatRTX will struggle to read it — in that case, copy the text out by hand or run it through a free OCR tool first (most phone scanning apps include one).

You'll know it worked when every file in the folder opens and shows readable text — not just a picture of text.

Point ChatRTX at your bills folder

In the ChatRTX window, look for a button or menu that says something like Add documents, Dataset, or a folder icon. Click it and pick the Bills-2025 folder you just made. ChatRTX reads every file inside and builds a private search index — basically a quick-lookup table of everything in your bills. The first time you do this, it can take a minute or two per document, so don't worry if the app looks busy for a bit.

If you can't find that button, check the top menu bar or a ⋯ (three dots) icon in the corner — NVIDIA sometimes moves it between updates.

You'll know it worked when ChatRTX shows a message like "Documents loaded" or you see a small list of your file names appear somewhere in the app window.

Ask for a one-page summary of one bill

Now the fun part. In the chat box at the bottom of the window, type a clear question about one bill. Start small — just one document, one question. ChatRTX reads your bills locally, which means your data never leaves your computer.

What happens next: the AI types out an answer in the chat. It usually takes 5-15 seconds the first time, and gets faster after the model has warmed up. If the answer feels too vague or too long, click back in the chat box and add a follow-up like "Make it even shorter — three sentences max."

You'll know it worked when the answer names actual numbers from your bill — a total amount, dates, and charge names that match what's on the PDF.

Compare two months and flag what jumped

Once a single summary works, ask it to compare. This is where ChatRTX is most useful for bills: it can read multiple documents side by side and tell you what's different. Be specific about which months and which kind of charge you care about, because vague questions get vague answers.

What happens next: the AI walks through both bills and points out changes. Sometimes it will say things like "international roaming fee: $0 in July, $42 in August" — exactly the kind of thing that's easy to miss when you scan a bill yourself.

If it answers "I don't have that information," check that both bill files are in the same folder you loaded in Step 3. If one is missing, add it and click the Refresh or Reindex button if you see one in the app.

You'll know it worked when the response names specific line items with dollar amounts and clearly says which month they came from.

Ask for saving suggestions — then double-check them

Now ask ChatRTX to suggest realistic places to cut back. Be honest about your goal so the advice is useful and not generic.

What happens next: the AI gives you 3-5 suggestions pulled directly from your bill data — things like "you have a premium add-on that isn't showing usage" or "your data usage is well under your plan cap, so a smaller plan would work." Read each one with a healthy dose of skepticism, though. ChatRTX can only see your bills, not your actual life — it doesn't know that your teenager uses 80 GB of mobile data "just in case," or that you actually watch that niche streaming service every weekend.

You'll know it worked when the suggestions are tied to specific charges on your bills, not vague advice like "consider switching providers" with no numbers attached.
