Let Copilot turn your messy notes into a clean project plan

Turn scribbled bullet points into a clear timeline with GitHub Copilot in under 10 minutes, no project-management experience required.

Hook: You’ve just scribbled a dozen bullet points on a napkin during a quick meeting. Instead of rewriting them into a tidy spreadsheet, let GitHub Copilot organise them into a clear project plan you can share with your team today.

💡 Tip: tap a step’s number when you finish it — a green tick appears and your browser remembers how far you got.

✅ Before you start
  • A free GitHub account (sign-up takes 2 minutes at github.com)
  • A web browser on any computer or phone
  • A short list of messy notes (text, voice memo, or photo of a whiteboard)
  • Roughly 8–10 minutes of your time
1

Open Copilot Chat

Open your web browser and go to copilot.github.com. Look for a button like “Open Copilot Chat” or “Start chatting” in the top-right corner. After you click it, a chat panel slides in from the right side of the screen. You’ll see a blinking cursor ready for your first message.

If you don’t see the chat button, look for a small chat icon or a menu with three lines instead.

You'll know it worked when you see a chat box ready for typing.

💬 Example(Just leave it blank for now.)
2

Paste your messy notes

Copy the bullet points from your napkin, voice memo transcript, or photo text and paste them into the chat box. Press Enter. Copilot will read your notes and reply with a short summary so you can confirm it understood everything correctly.

If the pasted text looks messy, Copilot will still try to extract the tasks and dates. If it misses something, just paste again with clearer wording.

You'll know it worked when Copilot replies with a short bullet list that matches your original notes.

💬 Example```
  • draft budget report by Friday
  • book follow-up meeting with Sarah
  • finalise marketing budget
  • send comms draft to John

3

Ask Copilot to create a timeline

Type or paste the exact request: “Turn these notes into a clear project timeline with start dates, due dates, and owners.” Press Enter. Copilot will reply with a structured list showing each task, who owns it, and when it’s due.

If the reply looks too simple, add one more sentence: “Include a short description for each task.” This usually makes the plan richer.

You'll know it worked when you see a neat list with columns like Task | Owner | Due date | Description.

💬 Example```
  1. Finalise marketing budget Owner: Maria Due: Wednesday 5pm Description: Review last quarter’s numbers and adjust allocations.

  2. Draft budget report Owner: John Due: Friday 3pm Description: Summarise findings and add charts.

4

Ask for a Gantt-style view

Type: “Show me a Gantt-style view of this timeline.” Copilot will reply with a simple text timeline or a small diagram you can copy into a document or slide. If the diagram is too small, ask: “Make the Gantt view wider so I can read it easily.”

If Copilot only gives a text list, reply: “Can you draw a simple timeline with days on the horizontal axis?” It will usually generate a small ASCII timeline you can copy.

You'll know it worked when you see a horizontal timeline with tasks lined up by date.

💬 Example```

Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri [Budget]----[Draft]----[Review] ```

5

Export the plan to share

Ask Copilot: “Give me a clean markdown table I can paste into a team chat or document.” It will reply with a ready-to-copy table. Paste it into your team chat, email, or project tool.

If the table looks too wide, ask: “Make the table narrower and keep only Task, Owner, and Due date.” You can always ask for a wider version later.

You'll know it worked when you have a clean table you can paste without editing.

💬 Example```markdown
Task Owner Due date
Finalise marketing budget Maria 2026-06-11
Draft budget report John 2026-06-13
```
6
Ask for a quick risk check
Type: “List any risks or blockers for this plan.” Copilot will reply with a short risk list. If you want deeper advice, ask: “What could delay the budget report?” Copilot will suggest ways to avoid common pitfalls.
If the risk list is too generic, ask: “Focus on the budget report risks only.” It will narrow the answer.
You'll know it worked when you see a short list of realistic risks you can discuss with your team.
💬 Example```
Risks for the budget report:
  • Maria may be out on Thursday.
  • John’s draft may need legal review before Friday.
⚠️ Common mistakes
  • Pasting too much text at once → Copilot can miss details. Paste in smaller chunks or summarise first.
  • Not confirming the summary → Always check Copilot’s first reply matches your notes. If it doesn’t, paste again with clearer wording.
  • Expecting Copilot to send the plan → Copilot can draft and format, but it can’t send messages or files for you. You’ll need to copy and paste the final plan into your team chat or tool.
🚀 Try it now
Open copilot.github.com, paste three quick notes, and ask Copilot to “turn these into a project timeline.” You’ll have a clean plan in under two minutes.
