How to Prepare for Your Next Job Interview Using Free AI Tools
Learn how to easily practice tough questions, research company culture, and build your confidence before the big day.
Preparing for a job interview can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to do it alone. This guide will show you how to use free AI tools as a personal, non-judgemental mock interviewer to help you practice your answers and calm your nerves.
- An AI chatbot account: You'll need a free account with an AI chatbot, such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Think of an AI chatbot as a highly responsive digital conversationalist powered by an LLM (large language model—the smart software engine that processes and generates text). Access can be through their website or a mobile app.
- Your job application materials: Have the text of the job description you are applying for, along with a draft of your current resume, ready to copy and paste.
- Your device: A computer (desktop or laptop) or a mobile device (tablet or smartphone) with internet access.
- Time commitment: This entire process should take roughly 30-60 minutes, depending on how much you wish to practise.
Extract the key interview questions
Instead of guessing what an employer might ask, you can ask the AI to analyse the job description to find the most likely questions. This helps you focus your preparation.
To do this, you will type a prompt (the written instructions or questions you type into an AI tool). You'll see a chat input field, often labelled "Message" or "Type your message here." After you send your prompt, the AI will process it and begin to type a response above your input field. If your screen looks a bit different, simply look for the main text input area at the bottom of the screen.
You'll know it worked when the AI lists 5 specific questions, each followed by a short explanation of why that question is relevant to the job description you provided.

Research the company's culture
To stand out, you need to show that you understand the employer's values and mission. You can use the AI to identify core themes, which will help you tailor your language to match their workplace culture.
In the same chat window, where you see the AI's previous answers and your input box, you'll type your next prompt. Once sent, the AI will process the text you provide and extract the underlying values. If you're on a mobile device, the chat history might scroll up as the AI types its new response.
You'll know it worked when the AI lists 3-4 distinct values (like "innovation" or "teamwork") and provides a brief suggestion on how you can weave these into your interview answers.

Set up a mock interview roleplay
This is where the magic happens. You can ask the AI to act exactly like a friendly, professional hiring manager. It will ask you one question at a time, wait for your response, and then give you constructive feedback.
Continue the conversation in your existing chat window. After you send this prompt, the AI will acknowledge your request and then type out the first interview question. If the AI asks for more information before starting, simply refer back to the job description you provided in Step 1. The AI cannot "hear" your voice, so you will need to type your answers.
You'll know it worked when the AI responds by saying something like 'Alright, let's begin! Here's your first question:' followed by an interview question.

Polish your stories using the STAR method
Employers love structured answers. The AI can help you organise your past experiences using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result—a classic, easy-to-follow formula for telling clear stories about your work history).
You'll type your rough story into the chat, just as you would with any other message. The AI will then read your summary and restructure it into the STAR format, making your achievement clear and impactful. Even if you're still in the roleplay from the previous step, the AI is usually smart enough to pause the interview and help you with this specific request.
You'll know it worked when the AI presents your experience broken down into distinct 'Situation,' 'Task,' 'Action,' and 'Result' sections, making it much easier to remember and articulate.

Calm your pre-interview nerves
Anxiety often comes from a fear of the unknown. You can ask the AI for advice on handling difficult, unexpected questions, or even ask it to share a quick, calming breathing exercise to help you focus.
Type your query directly into the chat box, just as you have for the previous steps. The AI will then generate a response offering practical advice or a simple exercise. If the AI suggests an exercise, you might need to mentally follow along, as it cannot guide you audibly. Remember, while the AI can offer suggestions, it cannot replace professional advice or truly understand your emotional state.
You'll know it worked when the AI provides a numbered or bulleted list of practical strategies, such as taking a moment to think or rephrasing the question, to help you manage interview stress.

- Trusting made-up facts (hallucinations): Sometimes AI can hallucinate (a term used when an AI confidently presents incorrect details as truth). Always double-check any facts about the company or role on their official website.
- Sounding like a robot: Use the AI's suggestions as a guide, but do not memorise its responses word-for-word. Employers want to hire you, complete with your unique personality and natural speaking style. Practise saying the answers aloud in your own words.
- Sharing private information: Never paste highly sensitive details into public AI tools, such as your tax file number, bank details, or private client details from your previous workplace. Always keep your information general and anonymous.

"I have an upcoming interview for a customer service role. Can you give me one common interview question for this type of job, and a simple tip on how to answer it well?"
