How to Make AI Images with Stable Diffusion
Type a description, watch Stable Diffusion turn your words into an image — no design skills needed.
Hook: By the end of this guide you'll have created your own AI-generated image just by typing a sentence. This is for curious beginners who want a free, no-install way to try one of the most popular image-generation models (an AI trained to turn text into pictures) without needing a powerful computer or any design skills.
💡 Tip: tap a step’s number when you finish it — a green tick appears and your browser remembers how far you got.
- A free Hugging Face account. Sign-up is at huggingface.co with an email address — takes about two minutes.
- A web browser on a phone, tablet, or computer. No software to install.
- Roughly 10 minutes, including account creation and your first image.
- Honest heads-up: the free version runs on shared computers, so you may wait 30 seconds to a couple of minutes per image. Stable Diffusion cannot reliably generate specific real people, brand logos, or copyrighted characters — keep your prompts original and you'll get the best results.
Create a free Hugging Face account
Open your browser and go to huggingface.co. In the top-right corner you'll see a "Sign up" button — click it. You'll be asked for an email address and a password, then to verify your email through a confirmation link. Once you've clicked that link and returned to the site, you'll land on your personal home feed.
If it looks different: the button might say "Join" instead of "Sign up" — same idea. If you already have an account, click "Log in" instead and skip to Step 2.
You'll know it worked when you see your profile picture or initials in the top-right corner of the page.

Open a Stable Diffusion Space
In the search bar at the top of Hugging Face, type "Stable Diffusion" and press Enter. You'll see a list of results — look for items labelled "Spaces" (these are free, hosted demo apps run by the community). Pick one with a green, blue, or red title bar that says something like "Stable Diffusion" and has a recent update date.
When you click into it, a small web app loads inside the page. You'll see a text box, usually labelled "Prompt" or "Enter your prompt", and a button below it.
If it looks different: there are several Stable Diffusion Spaces, so the colours and layout vary. Any Space that lets you type a description and click a generate-style button will work for this guide.
You'll know it worked when the page shows a text box where you can type and a button that says "Generate", "Run", or similar.

Write a clear text prompt
Click inside the prompt box and type a short, specific description of the image you want. Press Enter or click the Generate button when you're done typing. The model (Stable Diffusion, in plain terms: a programme that has learned to draw by looking at millions of pictures with captions) needs clear language to give you a useful result — vague prompts lead to vague images.
If it looks different: some Spaces split the prompt into a "Prompt" and "Negative prompt" box. The negative prompt lists things you don't want (like "blurry" or "extra fingers"). Leave it blank for now if you'd rather keep things simple.
You'll know it worked when the button changes to show a loading spinner or a "Generating..." message.

Wait for the image to appear
Stay on the page and let it run. Free-tier Spaces are shared with other users, so generation can take anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes. Don't refresh the page or click Generate again — that just queues another image and makes you wait longer.
When the image is ready, it will appear in an output area on the page, usually below or beside the prompt box.
If it looks different: some Spaces show a small progress bar or a percentage counting up. If the image never appears after five minutes, the Space may be busy — try a different Stable Diffusion Space from Step 2.
You'll know it worked when a finished picture shows up in the output area, separate from the prompt box.

Download or save your image
Hover your cursor over the finished image. Look for a small download icon (usually a downward arrow) in the corner of the picture, or right-click the image and choose "Save image as...". On a phone, tap and hold the image to bring up the save option.
Pick a folder on your device and save the file. It'll usually be a PNG or JPG.
If it looks different: if there's no download button, the screenshot tool on your device works just as well — on Windows press the Print Screen key, on Mac press Cmd+Shift+4, and on phones use the usual screenshot gesture.
You'll know it worked when the file appears in your chosen folder and you can open it to see your generated picture.

- Mistake: Writing prompts like "draw something cool." Fix: Stable Diffusion reads literally — name a subject, a setting, a mood, and a style ("a red fox in a snowy forest at sunset, digital painting").
- Mistake: Hitting Generate five times in a row because the first image wasn't perfect. Fix: Edit your prompt with one small change (a colour, a detail) instead of starting over — small tweaks teach you how the model responds.
- Mistake: Asking for a specific celebrity or trademarked character. Fix: Describe the look instead — "a curly-haired singer on stage in sparkly jacket" — and you'll get something original and copyright-safe.
Go to huggingface.co, search for "Stable Diffusion", open the first Space, and type this exact prompt: "a cosy reading nook by a window on a rainy evening, warm lamp light, illustration style." Watch what comes back — that's your first AI image.
