If you've ever closed Gmail feeling like you still don't know what was actually decided yesterday, Google is trying to fix that. The company is rolling out two new AI features to paid Google Workspace users, both aimed at taking some of the manual work out of staying on top of email.
What AI Inbox does
AI Inbox is the larger of the two updates. According to Google's announcement, it has two core jobs:
- Suggested to-dos: It scans your email conversations and pulls out the action items, deliverables, and deadlines hiding inside them. Google says this lets teams and managers see what needs follow-up "without manual note-taking or scanning through dense threads."
- Topics to catch up on: This section gives you context-rich summaries (think: a short briefing, not a full transcript) of your most important threads — including the ones with lots of back-and-forth. You can scan it to see what was decided or what changed without reading every message.
In short, AI Inbox does the skimming for you. It surfaces both what you owe other people and what's been happening in conversations you missed.
What Gmail Live does
The second feature, Gmail Live, brings voice search to your inbox on mobile (Android and iOS). It runs on Google's latest Gemini models — Gemini is Google's family of AI models, the same technology that powers Google's chatbot products. According to Google, Gmail Live offers a "low-latency, inbox-aware voice search experience": you ask questions in plain language, and the AI reads back an answer based on what's actually in your email.
Two small but useful touches Google highlighted:
- An email source card appears at every conversational turn, so you can see exactly which messages the answer came from.
- You can now pick which voice you want to hear.
Google shared some example questions that Gmail Live handles well: "What is the order status for Black Forest Construction Supply?", "When is my next mandatory training due?", "Show me the latest update from my manager, John", and "What gate is my flight leaving from tomorrow?" That's a wide range — work tasks, HR requirements, personal travel — all from the same voice interface.
Who can use them, and how
Both features are part of paid Google Workspace. AI Inbox is available on Business Starter, Standard, and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus; AI Pro for Education; and Frontline Plus. Google says there is no admin control for it — it just shows up for eligible users.
To find AI Inbox, Google says, look in the Gmail desktop client or mobile app menu. For Gmail Live, eligible users on supported iOS and Android devices tap the Live entry point in the Gmail search bar to start a voice session. Google notes it will be on by default for organizations that have Gemini in Workspace access, and that it respects existing admin settings.
One important limit Google called out: both features are currently only available to users in the US with English (US) as their language setting. The AI Inbox rollout on Rapid Release domains (Google's faster update track for some Workspace accounts) began October 12, with a gradual rollout that can take up to 15 days for full visibility.
Wrap-up
Google's paid Workspace users with English (US) settings are getting two new ways to read less and know more in Gmail: AI Inbox does the skimming for you, and Gmail Live lets you ask questions out loud. If you're eligible, the features are already turned on — open Gmail and look around the menu or the search bar to find them.
