You've probably heard the warnings: AI is "coming for" jobs, especially in tech. But the skills the companies building AI are publicly highlighting tell a different story — one where the most valuable people are the ones who can guide, check, and decide.
In a recent post, GitHub laid out what it expects to matter most for developers working alongside AI. None of the three skills are about writing more code. They're about managing the work.
The three skills
According to GitHub, the skills that will define this new way of working are:
- Directing AI agents — AI helpers that can take actions on their own — telling them what to do, when, and how
- Critically reviewing their output — catching mistakes rather than accepting answers at face value
- Keeping technical judgment at the center — knowing when to trust the AI and when to step in yourself
These aren't coding skills at all. They're leadership and quality-control skills — the kind you'd use to manage a junior colleague or evaluate a draft from a contractor.
Why this matters if you're not a developer
The bigger story isn't really about software. It's about how every job that involves writing, researching, or producing work is changing. If you already use AI tools at work — even just to summarize a long email thread — the same three skills apply:
- Directing matters when you give AI a vague instruction like "write me something about Q3 sales" instead of a clear, specific one.
- Reviewing matters because AI sometimes confidently gives you a wrong number — researchers call this a "hallucination," which basically means the AI made something up and presented it as fact.
- Judgment matters when AI gives you a passable answer that quietly misses what you actually needed.
Wrap-up
GitHub's list is a small window into how the AI industry is thinking about the next few years. The future it's describing isn't one where humans are replaced — it's one where humans who can guide, check, and decide become more valuable. The cheapest way to practice those three skills is to pick a real task you already do this week and try doing it with AI by your side.
