Create a multi‑room music playlist with Alexa+
Play the same songs throughout your home with one simple voice command using Alexa+
Hook: Imagine saying “Alexa, play my dinner playlist” and the same music starts in the kitchen, lounge and bedroom at once. You’ll learn how to set up one playlist that plays across multiple rooms with a single voice command.
- An Amazon account (free).
- The Alexa app installed on your phone or tablet (Android or iOS).
- At least one Amazon Echo device (like an Echo Dot, Echo Show or Echo Studio) in each room.
- A music streaming service already linked to Alexa (Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, etc.).
- Roughly 15 minutes of your time.
Open the Alexa app and go to Devices
Open the Alexa app on your phone or tablet. At the bottom of the screen you’ll see five icons. Tap the one that looks like a house outline (Devices). You’ll see a list of all your Echo devices grouped by room.
You’ll know it worked when the screen shows your rooms and devices.

Pick a room to start
Choose the room where you want the music to begin. Tap the room name (for example, “Kitchen”). Inside you’ll see a list of Echo devices in that room. Tap the three-dot menu (⋯) in the top-right corner.
If you don’t see the ⋯ icon, look for a gear icon or a menu with three lines instead.
You’ll know it worked when a menu slides up from the bottom.

Select “Add to Routine”
From the menu that just appeared, tap Add to Routine. A new screen opens with two tabs at the top: “When this happens” and “Add action”. Leave the first tab selected.
You’ll know it worked when the screen shows “When this happens” at the top and a big blue button that says “+ When this happens”.

Choose “Voice” as the trigger
Tap the blue “+ When this happens” button. A list of triggers appears. Tap Voice (it looks like a microphone icon). A text box appears where you can type the phrase that will start the playlist.
You’ll know it worked when you see a text box labelled “Enter your phrase” and a blue Next button.

Type your wake-up phrase
Type a short phrase you’ll say to Alexa, for example:
Tap the blue Next button. Alexa will confirm the phrase and show a summary screen.
You’ll know it worked when the summary says “When you say: Alexa, play dinner playlist”.

Add the music action
On the summary screen, tap Add action. A new list appears. Tap Music (it looks like a musical note). A new screen opens where you can pick the playlist and the devices.
You’ll know it worked when you see “Choose a playlist” and “Choose devices”.

Pick your playlist and devices
Tap Choose a playlist and pick the playlist you want to play everywhere. Then tap Choose devices and tick every room where you want the music to play (for example, Kitchen, Lounge, Bedroom). Tap Save in the top-right corner.
You’ll know it worked when the routine summary shows your chosen playlist and all the rooms ticked.

- Wrong room selected — If the music only plays in one room, double-check Step 2 and make sure you picked the correct room before adding the routine.
- Phrase already used — If Alexa says the phrase is taken, add a word like “my” or change the wording slightly (for example, “Alexa, start dinner playlist”).
- Device not ticked — If a room is missing, go back to Step 7 and tick the missing room before saving.
Open the Alexa app, go to Devices, pick a room, tap ⋯ → Add to Routine → Voice → type “Alexa, play my playlist” → Add action → Music → pick your playlist and devices → Save. Say the phrase out loud to test it.
